Modern mountain homes, lakefront places, and one-of-a-kind spaces built across Vermont — held to a standard that holds up for decades.

Maxwell Varela — Founder & Builder
Born and raised in Vermont, I spent half my childhood on a tropical island in Mexico. That contrast — the Green Mountains and the coast — shaped how I see space and materials. The more I traveled, the more I found myself drawn to the clean lines of modern Scandinavian and Japanese architecture, and to building with eco-materials that respect the land around them.
My parents did renovations and new builds my whole life, and my father has been doing commercial exterior finishes for over thirty years. I've been working in construction since I could legally work — honestly, before that too. It's all I've ever known.
For the past five years I built beautiful multi-million-dollar modern mountain homes in Stowe and Waterbury. Now I've branched off on my own, working mostly in Chittenden County and Charlotte — lakefront homes, farm-style properties, and homes with real character.
Right now I'm building something personal: an off-grid, eco Scandi-style retreat in Johnson — riverfront, tucked in the woods, with cabins and a mini-lux glamping spa. It's the kind of place that shows what sustainable building can feel like, and it's the standard I bring to every project I take on.
In fly fishing, a freestone river is one fed by snowmelt and rain — free-flowing, never dammed, constantly reshaping itself by the land and the seasons that feed it. It moves because it has to, and it carves its own path.
It echoes the Scandinavian word ström — a current, a stream, a force that runs. And it calls back to A River Runs Through It, where the river is the thread that holds a whole life together.
For me the name is the bigger idea behind the work: a flowing force that drives forward, but one that's still governed by nature. You don't fight the river — you read it, respect it, and build with it. That's how I approach every project. Momentum and craft, guided by the land and the standards that hold it all together.
No exceptions, no matter the budget. These are the ideas every build comes back to.
Every detail done the way it should be — even the parts that get covered up. What's behind the wall matters as much as what's in front of it.
Modern Scandinavian and Japanese influences, built with eco-materials that earn their place. Clean lines, nothing decorative for its own sake.
Fully insured and built to code on every project. Nothing gets signed off until it's right — and it stays right.
Born and raised here. I know the weather, the land, and what it takes to build something that lasts in it.
